Thanks X, for the opportunity to provide feedback on the debate process. I felt intimidated by the assignment of a debate format because I had no previous experience with participating in formal debate. I dealt with my initial response by reading about debates and thinking about how the debate process would facilitate online class learning. When I chose magnet hospitals as one of my preferred topics I had never considered the fact that there was a negative side to magnet. Since I was assigned the con position, it was a great learning opportunity. I also agree that random assignment of pro and con positions is a good strategy. I think this class helped to create awareness of a variety of trends and issues, and the debates helped with developing skill in presenting and discussing some relevant issues. The use of the debate format highlighted the importance of being acquainted with the opposing side if you are going to take a stand on an issue - if you are going to effectively argue your position, you should be prepared for the objections. As always, I believe the self-evaluation was a very beneficial learning component of the assignment. P.S. Congrats, X, on completing the courses for your Masters!
